Thursday night. May 1, 2014

I have been waiting patiently to paint one of my favorite models, Vanna Mae again. Finally, our beautiful, young, full time Artist’s Model was back at Medi’s FMA studio in Costa Mesa. Yay! This was the second time I worked with Vanna Mae. Here are some of my work done that night with her.

2 minute sketch.

Another 2 minute warm up sketch. I was tired and the strokes were less focused.

Finally, the long pose: 1 hour pose broken into 20 minute sessions. In 1 hour, I was able to get some work in. I wish there were longer poses so I can finish my life drawing pieces.

Vanna Mae’s pose reminded me of someone…Perched atop the throne of a queen, great-granddaughter of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, the daughter of King Belzassar, Queen Vashti.

Will full royal blood throttling through her veins, Queen Vashti decided to decline her husband King Ahasuerus’ summons to be paraded in front of his royal drinking companions, in her crown, and perhaps nothing else but.

Decisive moments leading to Vashti’s eventual banishment…

Savoring the mixed tastes of hubris, indignation and sweet mortal defiance against her monarch-spouse who reigned above her.

I did not capture a full likeness of the model, who has a pleasing rounder-shaped face. The character in my painting looked more Asian Indian, and had a narrower face. Oh, well! More reason to work again with this model at a future time. Click here to view my work from the first night working with Vanna Mae.

Thank you Vanna Mae for posing for us tonight. Thank you Medi for hosting our session and thank you to all the artists: Denise, Bradley, unnamed twins, and others for an enjoyable creative evening together! – Jzin
